“I felt a strong sense of relief and empowerment.”

If you’re thinking about seeing a pelvic health physiotherapist, you probably have questions: Is it for me? Will it be awkward? Will it actually help me? And while we’re happy to answer anything you want to know, we also thought you’d benefit from hearing from people just like you. That’s why we’ve asked a few Happy Down There patients to share their experiences with pelvic health physiotherapy.

This story is from a 26 year old person with a vagina who came to see Michiko after her gynecologist recommended it as part of her endometriosis treatment. Like many of our patients, this person didn’t know pelvic health physiotherapy existed, let alone could be an important part of their care and healing journey, not just with endo, but working through severe pain during sex, anxiety around gynacological exams, and sexual trauma in their past.

How did you find out about Happy Down Down There?

Michiko was recommended to me specifically by my therapist, who had worked with her in the past and spoke highly of her.

Why did you initially come see Michiko?

I initially began seeing Michiko because I was experiencing chronic pelvic pain as well as more severe pain during sexual intercourse and during gynaecological exams. I have endometriosis and I have also experienced sexual trauma, which I had begun working through in therapy. I was feeling a bit 'stuck' and unsure how to improve my symptoms. I felt that pelvic health physiotherapy could be a good addition to my treatment plan.

How did you feel after the first appointment?

I was very nervous for my first appointment, particularly because I often find gynaecological exams very anxiety-inducing and painful. Following the appointment I felt a bit emotional, but I also felt a very strong sense of relief and empowerment that I was doing something positive for myself. Each appointment was easier and I felt very encouraged and supported.

What made you want to keep coming for pelvic health physio?

Michiko made me feel extremely comfortable and in control, in a way I had never experienced in a healthcare setting. While some appointments were physically uncomfortable, they were never painful and I always felt very calm and relaxed, which seemed impossible up until that point. I saw improvements over the course of my treatment which made me feel encouraged.

What would you say to someone who is hesitant to see a pelvic health physio?

Taking the first step and making an appointment is the hardest part, but I'm really glad I did it. We deserve to feel comfortable and as pain free as possible, and to enjoy intimacy without pain or anxiety. I would definitely recommend giving it a try and seeing if it works for you.
