“I kept thinking the solution to my problem had to be a pill or surgery.”

If you’re thinking about seeing a pelvic health physiotherapist, you probably have questions: Is it for me? Will it be awkward? Will it actually help me? And while we’re happy to answer anything you want to know, we also thought you’d benefit from hearing from people just like you. That’s why we’ve asked a few Happy Down There patients to share their experiences with pelvic health physiotherapy.

This story is from a 37 year old person with a penis who initially came to see us because of an overactive bladder - even though they were pretty sceptical about whether physio could actually do anything.

How did you find out about Happy Down There?

My family doctor referred me to a urologist, who then directed me to pelvichealthsolutions.ca. From this listing, there were a few factors that led me to Michiko. First, proximity to where I lived. Second, I was looking for a female physiotherapist. Third, Michiko's bio (and website) clearly talked about her dedication  and openness to people within the LGBTQ+ community.

How did you feel after the first appointment?

Hopeful. Honestly, it's such a vulnerable position to be in. I felt awkward talking about it with people, even a professional. Michiko was incredibly friendly and professional. She explained things to me, and really worked to get a sense of what was happening with me physically, but also tried to get to the root of other potential triggers, like the fact that I had lots of work stress, limited exercise, and recent diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease.

What made you want to keep coming for pelvic health physio?

I was initially skeptical about physiotherapy. I kept thinking the solution to my problem had to be a pill or a surgery. Week after week, Michiko worked with me, answering my questions, and gave me the tools I needed to improve. One thing that really impressed me was her ability and willingness to be flexible whenever I wanted to deviate from our original plan. Sometimes I needed more time on something. Sometimes I wanted to push beyond the plan. She was ready for it all.

What would you say to someone who is hesitant to see a pelvic health physio?

It really is worth it. Do your research and schedule a chat to see if you're a good fit for one another. You're probably already feeling vulnerable, so you want to find someone you can be yourself around; someone you can trust. It feels like it's something that nobody is going to understand. But they get it. And in my case, Michiko got it. And she made those worries and insecurities fall away.
